1820 Nov. 17-18
J.B. to Mora

Knowing how extreme the penury of government is in Spain any
if possible to give
and that not expecting that any
immediate saving could be produced by any services which
could be rendered in any of the above lines of service,
my wish is if possible that what is done as above by my
Brother might be done without any money disbursed by
government. In To any horses of his own, the journey would
soon be : besides that so much time would be lost were
he to travel without change of horses. This branch of the expence
I could not expect him to defray. Perhaps the Constituted
authorities at different places would have the means
of procuring the requisite supply of horses and mules without
pecuniary disbursement. All that could be done by letters
of recommendation I take for granted would be done of
course. With or without disbursement, the necessary of
carriage, without expence to him, would be an indispensable
requisite. Provisions he could stock his carriage with: as
he has been used to do at the different towns. A trusty travelling
servant – a Spaniard who speaks French he would require need
to be furnished with, to serve as a guide: he such guide might, I should suffice,
be sent from Madrid in company with any
Courier that whose journey is was through France. Whether, for
security against robbers, a guard an escort of a few soldiers ought
to be and could be granted, would be for the Minister ad hoc
to consider. Lady Bentham I take for granted would think
it necessary to take with her a female attendant: but I should
expect to find that my Brother would not require any other
servant attendant than the Spanish one abovementioned. On this plan,
there would be one carriage I should think and the one out-rider
would suffice. It will be for consideration whether he
in addition to what is above he sh a small sum should not
be furnished to indemnify him against incidental expences – such as
those at custom houses, and those occasioned by accidents on the road.
But whatever it be
it had better not be furnished
not all at once, but
at instalments, in the
several towns in which
the government line funds
has funds.
