I mentioned Portugal where by the time you must have
enough of us, to know that we are it is of the world that
and not of Spain only, that we are Citizens: friends
to all, and disposed to serve any one at the expense of any
others. We should be happy to contribute to the defence of Spain
against aggression from Portugal: but we should be no less so
to contribute to the defence of Portugal against aggression from
Spain. Scarcely could a Spaniard, scarcely could a Portugueze,
be more anxious in his endeavours than I am in
mine to produce in some shape or other an answer of the
most cordial nature. If No sooner therefore did
I know of the acceptance of this offer on the part of Spain as also on
the part of my Brother, than I should causing the offer be for conveying it
to Lisbon, extending for the extension of it to Portugal.

His taking up his residence in Spain would be altogether
out of the question, all he could do would be to communicate
observations and form plans for natives to execute.
But if he met with a promising subjects to his mind, I should
not wonder if he were not disinclined to take a pupil or
two to live with him upon his estate either for rural economy or for some other of the branches of
art and science to which he has learned to which, as above, his attention has been
applied.
