J.B. to Mora
Monday 28 Nov 1820
Dear Sir, I told you I believe in my last of my calling
on your friend on Thursday: he called on me yesterday: and
we are as good as brothers: father and son would
be more to our ages. Of His desire to serve you he has
given me very convincing proofs: On he has told me
of his having been a collaborator of yours in some literary work.
Of every opportunity of conveyance to you he engages I shall have
notice. On Friday next the 1st Novr goes a somebody to Spain, by whom I may
send to the account of his 8v volumes: on the 8th of Nov. another a somebody else
by whom I may send as much. On the Friday I think he
send you the account of Coke of Holkham's husbandy as
mentioned in my last, a series of Travellers, a few
Examiners, and perhaps two or three other things another thing or two. But the
material thing is – a regular pack of Travellers, through this
channel. Now note the obstacles which I believe are onerous.
You are so poor that if by the post from Geneva you do not
correspond at your own expence, but upon charity through
the French mission. For us to make use of this was at first
pronounced impossible, but at length the impossibility was
overcome:⊞ ⊞ "What? not so
"even so small a
"packet as you received
"last from me"
(meaning that of the 24th
instance which I hope
you have received) "O yes,
"if it be no bigger than
"that – such an one
"I can send regularly. The task will however be no easy one. The
paper must be of the thinnest kind: what you have been accustomed
to receive from me would do to perfection, if it
would take the impression on both sides and still be legible:
but of that there is a doubt. Then there is the selection to be
made: which part to send cut out and send: what parts
to leave: for this purpose, some instruction from you might be
of use. that I should see to this myself would be very desirable
but how far time and eyes labouring under a chronic
weakness will admitt of it, is mater of doubt. The young
man on whom the furnishing the papers depends is able, honest
and honourable: but there he is cold and indolent. Should any
failure take place, we shall have a difficulty, you and I together to
keep Blaquiere from
making minced meat
of him.
