1829 Nov 28
Upon enquiry I have reason to think that the intelligence
about bolivar and Devo Devereux has not appeared in
any other shape that what I now said, and what it cut
out of a Morn. Chronicle of Friday 24th Novr 1820, which if
the Times was the paper in what which it first appeared
and will have been printed in the Times of the 23d.
My acquaintance is wrong named: but I will not set you
right. Little as you have to fear from Devereux you have
much to fear from the other: and therefore if you find him out,
it shall not be from me. I shall be much disappointed
and not well used if I have not the original letters here
in my hands for a few hours before the next Courier goes
– which is on Friday December 1st: and if I have, you
shall know all that I can let you know without prejudice
to my friends: and you shall have the very words in so far
as they are intelligible what is inserted is intelligible
without need of addition in the room of what is suppressed.
