1820. Decr. 28.
2
Ed Blaquiere Paris to J. Bowring. Freeman's Court Cornhill.
2

"Were we disposed to quarrel about the proud prominence of
"our present position aupres du grand homme, I suspect the advantage
"would be on my side, inasmuch as, that I was the
"humble means of enabling Mr B. to avail himself of your
"important services, an event, which places a decided balance
"in my favour — would that people never compared notes, or
"contended for honours with more jealousy than you and I
"on the present occasion! To return for an instant to the private
"correspondence: it appears to me that none of the Editors think
"it of sufficient consequence to merit payment of any kind,
"if any proof were wanting of this fact, would it not be found
"in the circumstance of neither Perry nor the Traveller Gentlemen
"having provided for meeting the postage? If I continue
"to send any thing to the former, it is, I trust, needless for me
"to explain my motives. Mora, in one of his late Epistles dated
"the 7th ulto, observes — "Etant a Paris, Bowring me parla du
"'desir qu'il aurait de me mattre en correspondence avec le
"'Times pour lui fournir des nouvelles: je n'en ai plus entendu
"'parle depuis. Comme je suppose que vous pourrez facilement
"'communiquer avec les Editeurs, je vous prie de les engager a accepter
"'mes offres, bien entendu que vous avez ete a meme de connaitre
"'mes nombreuses relations, et les facilites que j'ai d'avsir
"'des nouvelles fraiches et exactes. Vous me rendrez un grand
"'service."
The fact is, that poor M's circumstances force him to adopt
"this method of adding to his resources, and, considering the exertions
"he has made, he really deserves all the encouragement we
"can give. As to Mr B's liberality, it has been great indeed, but the
"state of our friend seems to require that something more should
"be done for him. If, therefore, Miss B. would have the kindness
"to mention the above proposal to Walter, who knows but that
"it might lead to some arrangement. If any paper can pay for
"information, it is the Times. I leave this business to you, and
"our kind friend of Warren Street, merely suggesting, that the
"sooner a reply of some sort is obtained, the sooner will you or
"myself be able to tell M. that the effort has been made. As
"to myself, I have totally abandoned every idea of receiving
"a shilling for my communications. Old Perry did indeed
"say, that he would pay for the information received — had
"he done so, I should have remitted it to M. You are acquainted
"with the fact of my having renounced my claim.
"Enough of this too often repeated topic. It was extremely kind
"of you to think of me when Miss C — came over: we have had
"the pleasure of seeing her good mother and self frequently, and
"are, as all must be, highly delighted with such a valuable
"acquisition to our small circle. Alluding to your endeavours
"to make Mr B. thoroughly known to the Cortes, I think you have
