1820 Decr 12
J.B. to Hobhouse

This conversion of Catholics into Radicals is what he has
taken for the corner stone of his influence, and thereby of
his interest, he is accordingly, as I am, against Catholic
Emancipation, by any other instrument than radicalism,
or at any time than at or after
that of a third the triumph of radicalism. On the Veto question his antagonist was Hippesley Cox, or Cox Hippesley whatever the
man's name is: he can not but be well known to you –
the foundation of his fame, Cox so I call him prays for shortness
Hippesley took the Veto side of the question.
At the Court of Rome (Hayes being a Franciscan friar and
having passed eight year of his life there from 15 to 23)
they intrigued one against the other, and Hayes would
have
being employed by the great body of the Greek Collective
beat him in the Propaganda to which it belonged
till Cardinal . who is Rome Minister and omnipotent was set against him
by that Baron , whose name speaks of .
The course that Cox took to destroy the influence of his
rival was to spread stories (which he says compleatly
groundless
to the prejudice of his chastity: stories which by
their publicity destroy themselves. Cox in whom
instance the defamation is mendacious gained Barham
in whom it is but temerarius. who
has a sort of relapse conscious, of might perhaps if
an able hand could get at him to work upon it, your
be used to give evidence against Cox: But as yet, for
want of such evidence, Hayes has been reduced to fall upon
proxi Printers and Booksellers, in the endeavour to get
his character cleared. He was is as void of all affectation in
any one man I ever met with: he deviates from no questions, and if you know of my mask of probity, I should
be glad to know of it. Without obtending any thing, in the
five hours that he was with me he told me as much of
himself in particular the he has, and those he has not, from intelligence,
himself, as I had time to get from him.
