Opinions of some length informs me pretty well how the matter stands
when M, high in office, applies condescends to apply for information
to one obscure individual like such as myself. The Great M man
man has some particular purpose of his own to serve: if by the
answer be such as suits the purpose, it is of some the
most of: in the opposite case as soon as hears of it it lies quietly on the shelf
the more and irrefragable the reason
of it, the surer is it of him this .

Is it does he entertain, any and his wish to know what is right? in other words what
is most conducive conformable to the universal interest? Not he indeed:
if he does he must be of a mould from any
I ever met with an expert to meet with. If it
were it would be to the public at large, and not to any
individual that his application would be made
what his endeavours at or to obtain what assistance is to be
obtained towards the accomplishment of that purpose.

At the time of the famous trial of Warren Hastings.
I possessed something of the confidence and the
of the good opinion of the first Marquis of Lansdowne
whose title which however character that of Earl of Melbourne.
He sent for me one day, and putting into my hand a paper
containing a question relative to the law of Evidence.
me says he your opinion on this question. No sooner The
slightest gleam was sufficient to inform me what it was he
was desirous of. The Monarch George the 3d had espoused
the cause of the Defendant, Lord Lansdowne though
forced out of office by an opposing party in the House of
Commons retained or at least changed to some place in the regards of the Universal
or at least regarded himself in command in their eyes exp was compleatly
pleatly closed to the
prospect of resuming
the reins of government
