Jeremy Bentham, London – to Toribio Núnez, Salamanca
Worthy and eminently well-beloved disciple
Such as thou hast made me to thyself, such, to please thee, I
make myself to thee. That work of thine which mine
are the subjects are a work of mine forms the subject has at length reached my hands me. Yes: thy
mind is the very child of my mind; they talent, of my
talent; thy enthusiasm, of that enthusiasm which, at the age
of seven years, kindled four and sixty years ago by the reading
of Telemachus, is not yet, as thou seest, altogether quenched by
age. How far my deserts may have been outstripped by thy praise,
shall be left to others to declare: occupation for rather more agreeable
and I hope not less uselful lies before me.
Before me stand in thought the rulers of
your thy nation: in my ears sounds the advice counsel which, in relation
to me and my works, thou hast the boldness to offer to them.
To give such counsel, though it does cost something, does not
cost much: to follow it, would cost more than, in their situation
man has ever yet brought himself to sacrifice; more than either thou
or I, to any such effect as that of eventual disappointment, ought
to entertain any such expectation as that of seeing them sacrificed ever to expect to see them sacrificed.
