1921. April 24.
J.B. to Nunez

As far as I can judge, it is only from such works of
mine that as have found a french elaborator and editor in Dumont
forming altogether seven volumes &c.c, that I am known to thee.
Finished and unfinished, published and unpublished together, knowing
these, scarcely doth thou as yet know half of me. All but those by
Dumont are in my native language. Of all my works, published and
unpublished, that are have been in print, and are not put out of my command
by being out of print, I am getting together a collection, and employing shall employ
my endeavours in getting it forwarded to thee: having the honour to
be upon such terms with the Constituted Authorities of your thy Country
at Madrid and here, as flatter me with the hopes of eventual
assistance for that purpose if necessary: but not to consume great means upon small objects, a mercantile
channel, if obtainable, might upon the whole be rep preferable.

At the commencement of the application of my labours
to be field of legislation, such was the impression made upon my
mind by a work which there would be no use in mentioning,
that for the single benefit of taking cognizance of the other author's
ulterior works, I would gladly have set myself to learn Arabic:
indeed, at different times, partly with a view to legislation, partly
with a view to chemistry, I applied myself to German. Whether
it be on the score of copiousness alone, or on any and what other
score Arabic, I have some reason to believe, is, even to him
who learns it to no other purpose that that of reading it, the
most difficult of all languages: on the like accounts, German,
I am inclined to think, (the half-formed language of China
out of the question) might be found to stand next to it. As to this point, English
is not Arabic: it is not even German.
