1821 June 3.

Under these circumstances it was, I think at that as (I believe) the
first interview, of any length, I had with my our friend –
with pride I call him

I said to him – my manner being in company as
playful in company as it may have appeared to you serious upon
paper – I said to him, that, should it ever happen to me to have
occasion to write to you, I should beg the favour of you to send
me a pretty little rod, suited to your character and his, that I
might have something in hand, with which to keep him to his
task: and, since then, I have, from time to time, talked of increasing
my demand for rods, till the number of them should
equal the number of those with in which the Consular instrument
of decapitation used to feel find itself surrounded imbedded. He laughs, and
I laugh: but the serious result is (is it not? Sir,) that a task,
such as that in question, is beneath him, and not suited to him:
and, that, though, supposing it accomplished by him, it would
be much better accomplished than it could be by any body
else, yet that, if accomplished at all, or half accomplished or
a quarter accomplished, it must be accomplished by other and
inferior hands. With me, though, as to personal respect, I have
more from him that I desire from any body, and though if he is not at his case with me, I should can not imagine how he should be so with any body he has broken
more appointments, I believe, than he has kept: and, with others, it has been still worse. I tell him that, when I am King of
Portugal, he shall be my Minister of Justice: and in this,
could any dependence be placed on him for steadiness, there
would be full at least as much of truth as of badinage.
