1821. June 3.

Not to speak of English, your supposed deputy might
take his choice between French and Latin: though that dead
language would be but an awkward vehicle, for ideas bearing
relation to living things, persons, and establishments. Duly
sensible of the truth of the French maxim – On un n'a de l'esprit
que dans sa propre langue
, I, for my part, could
self
however make shift to render myself intelligible in either of those languages. As to Portugueze,
not having as yet the in question not being as yet in possession of the rod above spoken of, it would be too much
for me.

Note, that he and my another friend of mine, Colon,
lineal descendant of Columbus, sole active Citizen in the Spanish
mission, agree in this – that they do not rise out of bed till
half an hour after midday. I wonder whether this is the fashion
all over the Peninsula. Be not jealous, my bood Sir: personally,
indeed, Colon is as kindly disposed towards me as you or
any body can be: and, to prove himself so, he has amply taxed
an indolence which seems analogous to Rocha's. But, besides
that he lives ten times as far from me as Rocha does, and is
hampered with diplomatic formalities in a House not his own,
the eyes of the Masters of the Master whom he serves are as green as grass
with jealousy: with that worse than yellow jaundice with which
I have twitted them, as you may in my letter to the Cortes – that body politic –
which, under your prescription, perhaps, has, in so noble and
unexampled a manner, purged itself of ill that disease.

Note, that for not keeping or not making an appointment,
(I forget which) in relation to some other business his reason was that he would
have had three or four pair of stairs to mount. This from a
man, who is or ought to be, in the vigour of his age. I, at
73, would for not only any put him up (it of man personally bief mount twice as high as walked upon plain
ground.
