1821. June 3.
What a part have I been acting all this while!
turning round upon my benefactor – returning evil for good, &and
after so much as I am indebted to him for, were it only for the
faculty of addressing myself to you, Sir, without the imputation
of intrusiveness. But, Sir, you will judge. After what I have received
and seen, can it be for me to entertain, and to act upon,
any such supposition; as that what has been said by the Cortes
to the Regency was intended for nothing more than a vain compliment?
that there really did not exist in that Assembly any
such desire as that so seriously and repeatedly expressed – the desire
of seeing my works in a Portugueze dress? Consistently with
what I owe – to yourself, Sir, to the Regency, to the Cortes, to the
Portugueze nation – was it fo me, by considerations of mere private
and personal regard, was it for me to be induced to be
kept silent, under the full persuasion, that, were I so to remain,
that desire would be almost, if not quite, compleatly frustrated?
In the midst of all this treachery and secret
undermining, I have, in my own imagination, cut out for our
friend a sort of work, which, while it would be more worthy of
him, would, at the same time, bear an intimate relation to my
own works. It would still have been leave him time amply sufficient for
the performance of any such services to his country, as the exigencies
of the day might, in your judgment, find him fit for, and call
for at his hands. But this is an enigma, the solution of which
must unavoidably be deferred to the next mail.
Along with this, goes my answer to Mr Felgueiras
in his quality of Secretary of the Cortes. It would be an apt
continuation of your more important kindness, if you would
have the goodness to cause information to be given to me of
the arrival of that letter, as well as of this.
Another favour I have to request of you is
the car making apt communication of my grateful
acknowledgements and remembrances to the three four several
Gentlemen, members of the Cortes, by from whose mention of me
on the 13th of April as for de , I received
such rare and distinguished honour; namely
Mess. José de Silva Carvalho, Sepulveda, Sarmento, Mowra and Magachàes.
