the result of about a dozen years observation
and reflection on the course taken
by the torrent of corruption and delusion,
of which every throne, by whomsoever filled
is the source. Looking at the Spanish Constitution,
I see, in the hands of the King
and other functionaries, neither appointed
nor removable by the people, patronage enough,
which is as much as to say, matter
of corruption enough, to bring things with
you, if not immediately, in the course of
a few years, to the state they are in with
as in England; and thus to undo what, with
such a mixture of wisdom and good fortune
you have done. With the sincerest respect
and with that anxiety which perhaps is but
the result of an ignorance which, in my situation,
is invincible, I remain, Yours,
J. B.
Englishman as I am, will you forgive my
speaking so plain as to say, that, in default of a
Washington, I should not be sorry to see that our
invitation had been given by you to Lafayette accepted?
Be it known to you however, that I never saw him, nor, in any other manner held.
