1821. July 2d.
J.B. to Carvalho

The satisfaction and reputation of giving currency to
such an article is it not, you may perhaps say, altogether
equal to the do. of manufacturing it. Perhaps
not. But then, to your profit in this natural shape, is
added the profit, whatever it be, which will be yours
in the factitious shape: and whatever satisfaction you
enjoy, will be include the satisfaction of receiving seeing & being seen by the felicity
individuals, to whom by tens and hundreds of thousands
you will have been the author that instrument of felicity: and seeing the felicity
of which you will thus have been the instrument: you
moreover will be the reputation to which the sort of popularity just mentioned
have been mentioned stands attached. My share will be
but no matter what it is, so long as it is that for which you
will have no cause to envy me.

in any shape would be bestowed in consideration of
them: and that, in regard to official situations, in general so
circumstanced, that the attaching to them a quantity of factitious
reward in some shape or other, and in particular in a pecuniary
shape, an is altogether indispensable, (as in the case
of the great majority of such situations it doubtless is) – still,
as between two candidates equal in point of aptitude in all
other respects, the one that one of them by whom the least quantity of the matter
of such factitious reward would be accepted, in return for an
engagement on his part to perform the service, is the one
by whom the service is most likely to be performed in the best manner:
