1820 Sept. 10

You will judge then whether it be possible in the nature of things, that, if the
lawyers lawyer-tribe can prevent it, any such work will be given to me to execute.
It is yo Your desire, Sir, it is – (on this supposition I must
speak or not at all) are that the thing your desire it is to see the thing done.
How then to proceed? Your Atheneum? At your suggestion is
there any probability chance of their taking up the matter, and recommending
it to Ministers, to Cortes, either directly or through the medium
of the public and the press? – In the The King – on this part point at
any rate it will naturally be inclined to sympathize with the people: on
this point its interests, and even (I should suppose) its prejudices, concurr with
those of the people. To the King it will naturally be matter of
indignation to see the interests of the people, its own included,
sacrificed so cruelly as it has always been to the interests of the lawyer tribe. and Rings Q. and R.
might not their influence be present a chance of being employed
with effect? especially especially on a point, on which it were they would

other sinister interest. (21 Sept. The above was written before the arrival

the public service. When the idea arrangement first presented itself to me, it
came without any collateral such purpose: but it would not be the
less subordinate to it. For assisting me while employed on the
work, let three of the four seven Ministers – the Minister of Justice,
the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of the interior (de la
Goberania para la Peninsula
) and the Minister of finance, in
their public or private capacities, send, each of them, some chosen capable
person (the younger the better if sufficiently instructed)

their studies under me, I would take the be of the administer to them respectively
such instruction as is in my power. Their abode should be as
near to mine as might be. – I might perhaps contrive to place
them in a house which opens into my garden: they should, one
or more of them, accompany me on the walks I regularly take every
morning, and now and
then at meals. As to
pecuniary recompense remuneration,
my situation and habits
preclude exclude every thing
of that sort altogether.
