1820 Sept. 26.
J.B. to Mora

A few Some days ago, £24 and upwards had already been
paid for advertising advertising the names of the Stewards &c in the
Newspaper Advertisements. Till latterly, by some accident, my name
had been ad omitted. It now however appears there, as also
upon the Dinner-Cards. I mention this, lest by accident
some some newspaper, containing an advertisement without
my name in it should have reached Madrid.

I In the box you will I hope find two or three political
squibs with caricature: the Que "The Queen's Matrimonial
"Ladder" was a week ago at the 33d Edition: Non mi
recordo
, at the 17th: each Edition, it is said, contains a
thousand copies: I thought the
people of Madrid might
like to see the manner
of our placards, I
have inclosed some
specimens of them:
You have likewise, I hope, a copy of the
In proceedings against the Queen down to the time of the late
adjournment. By a Member of the House of Commons (Serjeant
Onslow) notice is given of a Motion of his for investing that
House with the power of examining witnesses upon Oath: a
power which that House has not, while the Lords have!!! The
idea is probably taken from my a work of mine in the
box
which you will have, viz. "Swear not at all": for it was
he who first brought in the Bill for the abolition of the Usury Laws:
and of that measure the declared ground was my "Defence of
Usury": which by the bye I forget to send you, it being at the 4th
Edition, and in every bodys hands: in French, two different translations were mace of it,
at the time of its appearance in 1789, one of them by the a brother of De Lessert the Banker.
In one of the copies of my Essay on Political Tactics you
will find a caricature which I thought most prudent so to
conceal: it is the copy inscribed with your name on the outside.
I know of no others on the subject of your affairs.

I understand from our friend that he has sent you a
copy of a page of mine that made its appearance in the
Morning Chronicle, arguing against the your Proclamation Ordinance
for compelling men to take an Oath of adhesion to the Constitution, and proposing
a milder succedaneum: to each of three personages a copy made
was sent at the time:
1. to the Duke d St Carlos
still in London, by special
Messenger. 2. to
at Montauban through my
Brother: 3. to Minister of Justice Arguelles, by post. By no one of them has any notice been ever taken of it. Perhaps you may be of what seem to be their opinion: if not,
This you may mention if it be of any use.
In answer to two questions of yours
I believe I shall have for you another such
brief sheet as this by the next post.
That done, I think you will agree with me
that it is high time I should here pay considerable
attention to the Emancipation of Colonies.
