1822 Jany 11
J.B. to Portuguese Cortes
You have been deceived and I have been your deceiver undesignate
at the time designedly new if I to confess it. At my instance you have unawares put yourself the sceptre of legislation into
my Legislative hands. I must this to put it from me.
Give it to the proper hands, or I denounce you to your constituents.
Legislative Test after test have I applied to your virtue,
and out of every one of these still it has come out of them like gold out of the
refiners fire. Sacrifices such as no government ever
far made have I called for, sacrifices of power to duty of self-reg private
regard to public regard, and still they have been made.
Our manifestation of public regard I have now to call upon
you and in this manifestation, after the real sacrifice you
have so magnanimously made, there is no sacrifice.
I called upon you to open a your doors to a
proposed body of law from a foreigner to a foreigner, and you have done.
What I now call upon you to do is to thro open them
those expensive doors to your fellow Citizens – to the what
number of that body of your fellow Citizens without exception, and if in this
sort of magnanimity there be any the slightest change
let him who thinks he sees it point to it.
