J. Bentham to Felgueiras Secretary to Portuguese Cortes

Sir

Your Letter of the 22d December 1821 has
just reached me on Friday last. A contained series of the Journals of your
august Assembly has long been among the prime objects of my wishes even
wishes: wishes which I have made various and fruitless endeavour to realize
wishes. But The manner in which those wishes have at
length found their accomplishment is such as my
ambition had never dared live up to imagination had scarce been bold enough to suggest present to
covering as it does so many former manifestations of regard </del> me. After such a present from such a quarter,
whatsoever judgment I may have occasion to pass express
on the proceedings of your that Assembly will have need of
all the philosophy I can muster, to preserve it from
the sinister effects of those affections put sympathetically spoken suspicious effects from the taint of that partiality, the imputation
the existence of which the nature of men and things the human mind renders absolutely .

After weeks of fruitless endeavour I succeeded not
many days ago in obtaining a copy of that number
of the Diario do Governo (it was No 284 date
30 November 1821 which contains a translation of
my Letter to the Cortes dated the 7th of that year.
It recalled to me my mind memory not unaccompanied with the a sensation
of shame the announcement made in that Letter
of Testimonials an Appendix containing certain
Testimonials one's certain Reasons which had
been brought together to help constitute a foundation
for my ambitious hopes. This Appendix I can not now
think of without shame. I then declared it ready: and
