1822 Jany 26
J.B. to Felgueiras

In both these instances of should it happen to you to
receive at my hands any part of that service the rendering
of which is among the bears so high a place in among the objects
of my most ardent wishes, is you will see it will be matter of observation to you in what degree measure
and perhaps not altogether of discomfort that it is
not at your own expence but if at the expence of any one
at the expence of your neighbour that you your country are served.
To me it is matter of no small consolation that throughout
the is thankless and vitious task which necessity
has thrown into my hands, my best and kindest
friends have been borne no part in any of those censures unpleasant representations
which in necessity of the care called for at my hand.

Forgive me, Sir – but In the midst of my self congratulation the stile solemnity seriousness of your
letter when contrasted with the source warmth masks of affection so remarkable
in that former one in which the Secretary seemed to
speak in a more immediate manner the sense of the illustrious
body has something in it which is rather alarming
to me. The omission in not accompanying or immediately
following up the Letter Offer Proposed with the App grounds on which it rested
itself, nay the very Proposal itself may have been unfortunate
enough to have given offence: and in that supposition
the silence observ encouraged of this letter of yours Sir in regard to
that letter of mine may have been in part the expression given
to your displeasure. Then in further information comes the
present which seems to say to me – Sir – here if then we have
paid you and now we have done with you. Hope this a
hurt to you. not be Leave us to ourselves. Meddle not any more with our affairs which
do not belong to you.
