1822 Jany 30
J.B. to Felgueiras

+ 1
Letter 3
1

Sir

Your Letter of the 22 December 1821 has
just
reached me on Friday last. A continued series of the Journals of
your august Assembly has long been among the prime objects
of my wishes: wishes which I have made various and
fruitless endeavours to realize. The manner in which
these wishes will at length find their accomplishment,
is such as my imagination had scarce been bold enough
to present to me. But, after such a present from such
a quarter, whatsoever judgment, I may ever after have
occasion to express in relation to the proceedings of that Assembly,
will have need of all the philosophy I can muster
to preserve it from the sinister influence of those affections
the existence of which is by the nature of the human
mind rendered absolutely inevitable.

This present, for the actual receipt of which I have still to
look with longing eyes is of the number of those rewards which the really
deputed Representatives of a free people need not blush to
give, nor a man, all whose honest wants are already provided
for, to receive: a reward by the extraction of which no
want distress is made more pinching, pungent, no just resentment kindled.
To a Grecian victor a sprig of parsley was
a reward which found thousands to contend for it. The
parsley leaves could do no more than form a momentary
decoration for a covering to the head, the leaves you send
me will have a nobler use. Ah! why are no Would but the
difficulties less were less obstinate, which oppose themselves to the use
which it will be among my endeavours to make of them! Were
it not for a little Latin and French — (for us to Spanish and Italian
the difficulty is little less) the instructions they convey would be altogether inaccessible to me.
