Letter 3
2

I have now, Sir a serious misfortune to inform you
of: to myself it is a very serious one: a misfortune the causes of which are unknown to me, and
the possible consequences unfathomable by me.

Your Letter of 22 Decr last speaks of a former letter of the 3d of that
same month, written in pursuance of a Resolution of the
Cortes of the 26th of the month then last preceding. Sir, That letter of
yours has never reached me.[+] A Portuguese friend of mine On Sunday a informed of the fact
whose assertions I had been indebted on former occasions, undertook
at my request to search for the Diario in which
the Resolution of 26 Nov was reported: but to the field of
less research was composed he said of all the
Newspapers that are published in Portugal, and
as they a column in neither
nor the elements of it in any sort of order he could not
promise success was than he could promise. The
is arrived at which I must work and send off this lett
or I remain for a week longer in the situation of a man

[+] The Diario of
the next day to that
same 26th might
have enabled Inference conjecture
to supply the gap.
To this moment all my
endeavours to obtain
a sight of its that document have
been fruitless. Particulars
of them I will not
presume to trouble
you with. In expectation
of what they
might do for me,
I have forborne writing
this till the last moment.
Meantime in your eyes
and those of your illustrious
Colleagues, my situation
may, for I know not

how long have been that of a man against whom his silence presented

itself as evidence but too strongly probative
evidence of negligence and ingratitude.

By this several species of conveyance, different packs been at different times

been addressed to your
Minister of

Another fact

Another fact: between
this and that I hope
there is no
connection. When

When your Letter, Sir (I hope it is your letter
and not a counterfeit) was delivered at my House it
was delivered to a Maid Servant, from whom I could extract
no other account of what was said passed on the occasion
than, that the Gentleman by whom it was delivered appeared
to be an Englishman and said it came from Portland
Place. In Portland Place are the residences of several
foreign Ministers, between a few of whom and my Hermitage
there has occasionally now and then been some little intercourse: but I was
not able to fix the reference upon any one in particular, from any what
thing else I was able to collect.
