were less obstinate which oppose themselves to the use which
it will be my endeavour to make of them. Were it not for
a little Latin & French — (for as to Spanish & Italian the
difficulty is little less) the instruction they convey would be
altogether inaccessible to me.

I have now Sir a misfortune to inform you of: to
myself it is a very serious one: a misfortune the causes of
which are unknown to me & the possible consequences unfathomable
by me

Your Letter of 22. Decr Last speaks of a former Letter of
the 3rd of that same month, written in pursuance of a Resolution
of the Cortes of the 26th of the month then last preceding.
Sir! That letter of your's has never reached me! The Diaries
of the next day to that same 26th might have enabled conjecture
to supply the gap. To this moment all my endeavours to
obtain a sight of that document have been fruitless. Particulars
of them I will not presume to trouble you with. In expectation
of what they might do for me I have forborne writing
this, till the last moment. Meantime in your eyes & those
of your illustrious colleagues my situation may, for I know
not how long, have been that of a man against whom
