J.B. to José Fernandez Thomas

4 4

As the Cortes send to me through their Legation,
I they will expect I imagine that I should
address myself to them through the same channel
instead of sending through one Post Office which
for such a purpose was the only channel that, till
of late late could be regarded as safe. This Letter
of mine will be sent to you, early tomorrow morning. Also the
Copy of the printed paper if not sent now.

I hope his Excellency, with whom I have not
the honour of a personal acquaintance, will not be
offended at
take amiss my applying on this occasion to you,
to whom I have been so specially recommended.

Jeremy Bentham,
with utmost haste.

Senhor José Fernandez Thomas
&c &c &c.

Jeremy Bentham to
Jose Fernandez Thomas.
Queen's Square
Place Westr. Wednesday
24 April 1822.
3/4 after 10 a.m.

Letter 2. of this day.
I shall fatigue you beyond
measure. Casting
my eye on the brouillon
of my letters I perceive
a passage which
now strikes me as being
rather obscure.

For remedy, you may
perhaps be kind enough
to afford conveyance to
the accompanying
note; after giving to it
the proper direction.

Brouillon

Jeremy Bentham to José
Fernandez Thomas

Queens Square Place Westminster Wednesday 24 April 1822 10 A.M.

My respected but highly respected though as yet unseen friend

This accompanies a packet containing a Letter of mine to the Cortes and
a printed Paper
intituled Codification
Proposal the which
they are in expectation
of.

My Letter to the Cortes could not have been sent
otherwise than sealed: a legible copy could not be
got up time enough to have sent to you

A Supplement to the printed Paper sent —
a Supplement composed of the two last received
Letters from the Cortes to me is in the press. When
compleated a copy of it will be sent to you, and as
also one to his Excellence, whose Christian names
I have not been able to learn.

Fair Copy Sent by R. Dunne together with the packet.
