4&5 Motive and occasion. These will go hand in
hand: it will be difficult to consultconsider either without reference
to the other.
Motives most apt to be productive of this effect are the
following.
1. Antipathy. When this is the motive the word commonly
employed for the designation of it is revenge or vengeance:
but in these words is implied on the part of the agent
a conception at least of a wrong produced by the patient slayee
to the agent or some person or persons in whose welfare he
takes especial interest, in which case the passion of antipathy
has an ordinary as well as a natural cause. But it
may be and has been that the passion of in the in question antipathy
has not had any such ordinary cause: instance antipathy on
the ground of religion.
