§ 1. Introduction History

Joint cause the first, the feudal system. Under this
system, the Monarch was the proprietor of the whole or the greatest
part of the land had the Monarch for its proprietor the Monarch:
but on condition of parcelling it out amongst a the assemblage company of subordinate chieftains, on condition of their on their part
contributes respectively to constitute the main strength
of the army of which the defensive force of the country was composed a
defensive force which might at any time be in requisition
and employment was composed.

Under the feudal system difference in respect of
power and rank was constituted by difference in respect
of opulence. Not indeed directly: but indirectly and not
the less effectually class to wit through the medium of difference in
respect of armature, that is to say in respect of the expence
of armature.

Among the Romans the ability to defray the expence of
keeping a horse constituted a grade on the conjunct scale of
rank and power and rank: among the Northern immigrants tribes by
whose empire that of the Romans was subsisted and succeeded, this same the like
effect was produced by the same cause. Among the
northern tribes by nothing but the possession of land – of
land in sufficient quantity to furnish the expence by
at placing parcels of it in the hands of so many men
by whose labours this expense in addition to that of their own sustenance
could be defrayed. But for the defraying of of this expense
where – from what source – was the matter to to come? Wealth in an
a moveable shape there was next to none, other than that which in an shape
was kept moving in the immoveable land. Thus, small
as was the quantity of labour necessary for the maintenance of a horse
with the addition of the iron cases employed for defence
against weapons of the
cutting sort, the only
offensive weapons then in
use the numerous large was the amount number necessary of the men whose labour was employed in defraying it, large accordingly the⊞1
⊞1 the quantity of land
necessary which under
the low state of⊞2

those times was necessary
for their subsistence.
