1828. Jany. 15
Law Amendment or Duelling extinguishablePropositions
§ 1. Introduction History

In that mode of warfare art learning and practice were not
less necessary than in the present mode: in those days, than
in the present days. But armature being so different, correspondently
different was the art learning and practice. In the present
mode little small as between army and army was the dependence upon the comparative
strength of individuals on one side in comparison with that
of individuals on the other side: in that antient mode,
much depended upon that same difference.

In the modern mode of warfare, the a constant
mode of exercise is that in which many act in conjunction
and without any to oppose them: for, for this purpose, such
is the relative quantity of the matter of wealth in in all shapes movable shapes
men in vast numbers may be collected and kept together.
In the antient mode of warfare the exercise was of a
widely altogether totally different cast: men in any such large numbers
could not be collected: on the part of that class of which
the armature was so transcendently superior – of that class
by which alone any armature of the defensive kind was
possessed, exercise could not without opponents be carried on.

With oppon Between opponents it could be done
with suffic an extensive degree of benefit between no
opponents no more than one on each side. In this
mode more dependent upon strength – upon strength of
man and horse than upon skill: and in so far as it
depended on skill it depended more on skill in horsemanship
than on skill skill in any other shape.

Hence came the tilts and tournaments: on
the occasion of which men the combatants for sport, the
armature and equipment being accommodated adapted as far as the nature
of the case admitted, to that purpose, were the combatants contended
one against one more generally that in greater numbers.
In this dual mode
combat will be carried
on in covered areas – in buildings, with for
the reception of the Ladies
but in so far as covered
space was employed
the expence of building confined the numbers within very narrow limits.
