Law Amendment or Duelling extinguishablePropositions
§ 1. Introduction History
In this state of things practice and skill in single
combat became became the distinguishing occupation, reputation
for skill in this occupation the chief honour of the man
of the ranks next to the highest hat of Baron under that of Monarch.
In this But to the carrying on of this occupation courage in no small
degree was necessary: falls and bruises constantly, loss
of an eye not oft infrequently were among the consequences
of it.
Here then was another source of distinction: and
thence of respect. They commonly – those whose
means did not enable them to defray their expences had
indeed their exercise. The exercise – and indeed the only
exercise suited to their condition was archery. But for in
the case of this exercise no armour of the defensive kind is of any
use: no danger nor suffering in any shape is ever sustained experienced,
no danger ever incurred: no demand therefore for courage.
So much for the feudal system with its armature, its
distinction of ranks, and its sources of honour.
