Law Amendment or Duelling extinguishablePropositions
§ 1. Introduction History
Enter upon the stage now the of superstition. Enter now what is called
religion: with the name of religion on his front.
Among the maxims still received – received in ap
outward show at least if not in universal feeling, is then
that success in fighting combat upon the largest scale depends on not so much on the general connection between cause and effect the special favour of the Almighty towards
one side in preference to the other side: love of justice being of the number of his attributes and that on which side
the preference shall be given depends upon the its being the side
upon its having justice on its side.
Moreover But in the declared and incurious opinion of the of the
of religion in of the each side nation or assemblages of nations, that justice on its
side has this same principal ally on its side.
But if in the combat of a hundred thousand against
a hundred thousand success is thus dependent upon justice, –
if he who that side party has justice on side is so sure to
or conversely if it be so sure of that party if the assurance be so great, that of the assurance the certainty is so who is so sure to have
been in the right, why not in the combat between any one
of them and any other. Stunting in Setting out from with this assumption, it is
altogether natural at least, if not reasonable to arrive at
this conclusion.
