Law Amendment or Duelling extinguishedPropositions
§. 1. Introductory History
The Ministers of religion, when it depended upon them solely
the Ministers of religion in so far as the compleat management of the business was in their
hands, had other and to themselves more convenient and agreable
means of coming at the truth: they had their ordeal in its
various forms: putting the hand in warm water the whole they
had contrived to give the appearance of boiling water
played at blindman's buff in a labyrinth dancing-room constructed of on
ploughshares, and so on with others in no small
variety and multitude.
The blindman's buff trial with its several results
lastedcontinued as education and practice for a certain time, but it was not calculated
to continue for ever. Sooner or later the ruling part of the
public saw came to see through the deception fraud, as the blinded wanderer dancer
had done through the handkerchief. The contents of which
the priesthood had the sole management fell into disuse.
The which had put an end to those fraudulent
tests did not apply extend to the fighting test: all was in that
case fair and above board: where no fraud was used everybody
could plainly enough see that there was none.
The persuasion inculcated by the priesthood remained:
The benefit does which, by the priesthood, has been derived fr by from
persuasion was thus taken from them extinguished. But the persuasion
still remained: the opinion was universal, that if when
whence two men fought – at any rate if it were on a proper
occasion, and in a proper manner that man he would be victor who had
justice on his side.
