Law AmendmentsPropositions
In those dark ages good fortune in single combat was
accepted as proof of verity of assertion: of examples from on in
the individual instance occasion in question from what was called logical in logical language and ethical language, in the language of the antient moralists and logicians and moralists
falshood. In this enlightened age if it be no longer accepted
as proof of veracity in assertion – of exemption from what was
called ethical or say anti-moral falshood, or immoral falshood. Not more
correct is this modern view of the matter than was that antient
one. If it be a proof it be of virtue in any shape a proof it
be, it is in the shape of courage. Now as to its being proof
of courage in a shap certain shape, this is true beyond dispute.
But that which is not true beyond dispute is – that courage
is itself has of itself a just claim to a place in the
catalogue of the virtues. If a virtue it be, so is it a vice.
