Law Amendment,Propositions
Courage, or what wears the faces and names of it is produced
by one or other of two causes – insensibility to danger – that is to
say to the probability of suffering in the shape and from the cause
in question, or sensibility and obsequiousness to the force of
some motive or motives which in his instance on the occasion in question have the effect
of overpowering the motive created afforded by the contemplation of suffering when contemplated
the danger by the consideration of that same danger.
In the first case if a virtue it must be called,
it is a virtue in respect of which in men may has for it his rivals not
only the more stupid and unintellectual of his own species, but various species
of brutes: he has the dog: he has the rattlesnake witness the bulldog: witness the rattlesnake: nor is either
of those animals less able to convert a falshood into a truth
to cause that which has not been to have been is not to be or that which is not to be or that which
has been not to have been, than the man who is the best shot
who th in this way has killed more of other men than he has
fingers upon his hands he has fingers.
