III. Motives almost any species of under- of the matter of good
in any of its forms. Love of money. Love of power, love of reputation.

For a benefit, in any shape, no matter from what source
regarded as flowing desirable expected, individuals, men there are, no matter in
what
in any number are competitive. To draw from the some one put out of the way one or
or more more of those who can regarded as most formidable, the Duellist puts picks a quarrel
with him or them, and so either challenges him or them
or so by means of insult can he lay him or them lays them
under the necessity of playing challenging him; and thus acting the part of the self-regarding
sympathetic
Duellist as above.(a)

(a) A sample of this species of Duellist may be seen in was afforded
exhibited by the once two illustrious United Statesmen Colonel Aaron Burr
and Colonel Hamilton principal contributors to the
political periodical – the Federalist were in competition for influence ascendancy. They wrote against one other. Burr
complained. For a Hamilton desisted: but on his returning to the
charge, Burr determined to get rid of judged that nothing but death would silence him, Burr was sure
of his mark: they met, and and Hamilton fell dead expired.
Such was Burr's the victor's own account of the matter as delivered, to the author
of those pages: but, by the mention of it in confidence is betrayed,
for the same account was given to multitudes: – a
most instructive evidence of the state of the highest public
mind in the country in which he was bred.
