Ch. II Codification: or
Ch. III Remedies Duelling
§ 1. Instruction
On behalf of the practice of duelling, in support of
its claim to the presence attributes reputation of preponderant usefulness, its use in
the character of a security against breaches of good manners the rules of urbanity
and thence against quarrels and hostility in all manner of
shapes, has and not without a considerable degree substantial
grounds been from various quarters advanced.† † ☞ Search Dumont Trubis &c
But never till now has the case been so closely scrutinized
into. The arguments bearing against it being in a direct way have been here brought to view to
a greater extent that ever hencefore: and as to the securing
for instruments of manners and against ill blood and quarrels and hostility it is thought
that with or without the aid of the other securities provided
under the here proposed system by giving precedence
and accessibility to official law seconded under the tutelary
force of the Public Opinion Tribunal in particular the aristocratical
section of it will suffice to produce for the production of all the good
effect which the duelling system in the present state of it
is, or appears to be able calculated to produce.
