The more intense and deliberately and intense stronger the asseveration he has elicited from the
challenger, the greater will be the probability of his
that such his endeavour will be followed with success: for the
more intense and deliberate and intense the asseveration, the
greater will be the ignominy in so f the the more
intense the disapprobation of on the part of the public, in so
far as it is regarded as being false.
This approb asseveration may apply to either or
both of two distinguishable objects – 1. on the occasion in
namely the past and the future conduct of the challenger:
the past as to his having given the virtual challenge direct
or virtual; the future, as to his intention to consider it
as continued to be given have place: in the fir first case, falshood will
to the species shape assumed by the falshood will be simple mendacity;
in the other case, mendacity followed by perfidy – by
breach of promise.
Moreover the more intense the asseveration, the
better warranted will the challengee be, in the opinion of the
public, will the challenger be in regarding the challenge as not having been given
nor meant to be continued, and thence the less likely as
giving acceptance to it, and joining in the duel accordingly.
Suppose If by the challengee the challenge is not regarded as being given,
the duel will not take place: and suppose the public not to
regard it as having been given, he will not suffer in the estimation
of the public on the ground of supposed timidity as having given acceptance to it a challenger.
