evening M. Dumoulin went to see the first representation
of a new piece at the Theatre de
Gmnase, in order to give an account of the success
of the play, (being one of the three Editors of
the Constitutionnel); between the acts he saw M.
Berryer going out of one of the boxes for the purpose
of proceeding to the saloon. There were several
persons in the passage; M. Dumoulin instantly
accosted M. Berryer, and said to him – "Monsieur,
I have been looking for you a long time, to give
you this;" and, so saying, he gave M. Berryer a
severe blow on the cheek; the latter stooped
down as if to pick up something; this frightened
M. Dumoulin, who retreated a few paces, probably
imagining that the other was going to
return the blow; but M. Berryer only stooped
to pick up a piece of paper which had fallen
from his hands. A stock-broker, who was with him
addressed M. Dumoulin, and requested him to go out,
to avoid being remarked, and to prevent scandal,
but the latter not only declined, but said
(raising his voice) "I wish that all those
present should know that it was Evaritte Dumoulin
who gave a box on the face to M. Berryer,
the Advocate". He then went away.
On the following day M. Dumoulin received a challenge
from M. Berryer. Two of the Editors of the Constitutionnel acted as seconds to the former, and an Editor
of the Quotidienne and an Aide-de-Camp attended
M. Berryer. It was ageed that the duel should be
fought with swords. The principals and their seconds
set out from Paris in two hackney-coaches, which
were driven to the Bois de Boulogne. A fit
