and perhaps I am this may be the first book on Moral
subjects in which it has been done so with regularity uniformity and
perseverance. who at every stage when he has seen a [Privium] branching of the road has thought of setting up a way-mark. direction-post. [In doing this, if] had it been it were my own original
idea, to have done so I should have thought I had done, more
than has ever been done by any one, for
the good of [moral] Science. It is not. No
other merit on this same was left for me than those of accuracy
& patience. The merit of invention belongs to
others. It is right fit it should be known who
those others are.
It may be very true, that this man in his
Logic, and another man in his Logic, may
have observed in laying down the rules of
Definition, that Definition was a very good
thing; nor do I doubt but that the same
ingenious hand which has wasted so much erudition
in unravelling from the chaos of
ancient learning a few equivocal indications anticipations

of some of the truths demonstrated and much
more numerous some of the errors maintained
by the moderns in modern maturer times might find out something
said in Aristotle or some other Philologist
of antiquity to the same purpose:
nor is any one to learn, that there have been
writers on all sorts of subjects who in in
their books, have given here & there for the purposes of their books,
a definition.

But it was reserved to Helvetius who to [give it] feel it's full
importance — It was is Helvetius who has first
seen that a collection dictionary of Definitions moral terms defined of moral
terms, instead of being merely subordinate in it's use
[utility] to the work from which whence the definitions it should be
taken, extracted, would of itself be superior to that of
any other works work which did not comprise it.
It was for Helvetius, to see and to acknowledge
that it is it for such a work as in England Great Britain only
can be atchieved. It was for him to see read in it
to proclaim it as the that Talisman before which the chimaeras of
Scholastic Metaphysics & the contradictions
