To Tyro's overcurious.If the book turns out what I would wish it
two sorts of objections and these opposite ones it will suggest themselves
to two sorts of persons. The first
are those who come to the subject entirely
ignorant and unprepared: to these it will
appear these will find it.[overcurious.] They will be scandalized
to see so much parris taken about matters
that will appear to them so plain.

To Veterans obscure. The second are those who come to
it ill-prepared: who have plentifully stocked
themselves with that knowledge which (as
legal knowledge is singularly apt to do (confounds
the judgment: These will find it visionary
and obscure. Founding itself upon these ideas
which belong to all men in common, ideas

backs to; and not upon ideas in which
they are peculiarly conversant, ideas which
in their minds have supplanted and overgrown the others,
it will be more difficult to be understood
by them, tho' even by them less liable to be in danger of being misunderstood for the same reason that makes it
less less ismore easy to be understood by other men.

There never was a discovery yet made, but
what found some people by their very knowlege
incapable of receiving it.


If there is one thing set of notions to which my opinions men are
more averse more than to another, it is Popery:
this being the case, no Papist so bigotted, but
I would profess could declare myself more cordially disposed
to him, more of his way of thinking
let him agree with me in the single article
of toleration than with him whose sentiments and affections
disagreeing with men discordant with them in that, were in all
other respects in unison with my own.
