Tillotson's Works 5th Edition fol. p. 366 - v. MS 178.
He that can once be brought to contradict his senses
is at an end of certainty+:..
..... external evidence &of confirmation of the —
whole & true Relig. .... I mean the Miracles
which were wrought by our Saviour & his Apostles,
the assurance whereof did at first depend upon the
certainty of Sense.
If a Miracle were wrought for the proof of it, the
very same assurance which any man hath of the truth
of the Miracle he hath of the falshood of the —
Doctrine, that is, the clear evidence of his senses
All this tho' excellently expressed would hardly
be worth quoting but from the pen of a Divine whom
calumny itself can not suspect of sentiments unfavourable
to Religion.
