Method of Calculating the Mischief of an Offence.
That no other method can be more exact than that above proposed.
As far as the calculation estimation made of the mischief of an
offence in pursuance of this method shall appear to be can be exact, the method will answer
every wish that can be formed when the occasion.
Where it fails of being exact, it will indicate I
believe on what account it does so: it will also
appear I believe that the mischief of the offence
is not in the nature of things to be calculated
to greater nicety by any other method. [to a degree of exactness eminently superior.]
Of what nature are the errors it admits ofIf any correction be to be made to the calculation
given according to this method of the mischief of
any species of offence admit of correction it
will be by pointing out as omitted some entire species
either of pain or negative evil asthat as was of importance
enough to be taken into the account; or else some
item of value that was as omitted in the account taken
of the value that has been statedof some particular species of
pain. This will be then an error in with respect to the execution
indeed will shew an error: but with respect to the
utility of the method itself, it will serve [only] but the more to illuminate and
confirm it.
The mischief coming from of every offence is a complex map:
to explain the nature of it therefore there is but one
way and only one which is to analyze it and
state to make a separate display [statement] of the
several items of which it is composed.
In this method then it will be difficult I believe
to say what there is that should warrant any one to treat it as visionary and inapplicable:
