in any lower genus than that of entities: so that to
distinguish them above no other specific appellatives could be
used than those by which entities are distinguished.
The rest of motives first mentioned being stated real
or semi-real entities motives, those of the sort last - mentioned
must be stated fictitious. But this denomination
would give birth to two would be give inconvenient on on two accounts.
In the first place it would produce a troublesome ingermination
co-accruation of epithets. In speaking of the an interior
motive for example it might be necessary in order
to distinguish for distinctions sake to add the
the epithet real. We might have occasion
to speak of the present interior real motive; and by
that thus have the word motive loaded with three
epithets at once.

In the next place, the epithet fictitious as applied
to the term motive would be apt to give rise to a very awkward
ambiguity. It would seem at first sight, especially
to such readers as should may not be well conversant
in the distinction between fictitious and real entities,
that by fictitious motive nothing was meant
but a motive attributed to the person in question —
a motive by which in fact he was not actuated.

shall take leave to say in every case the principles
