7) Of the Principles of human action. Sport.

pleasure which constitutes is the motive belonging to
it is but a faint pleasure; and therefore yields
readily to the indirect opposition of rival
pleasures
. On the same account the influence of
it is weak in comparison with the influence of
those pains thatdeterminatives of the painful kind that the
tendency of which is to restrain a man from
that conduct those actions to which he would is be excited
by this pleasure: it yields in a word readily to the direct
opposition of restrictive pains. It is combated with
advantage by the pains belonging to the three great penal
Sanctions.

It runs readily into alliance with the propensity
of vengeance Anger; and adds to the malignity of it's
effects. It runs readily into alliance even with
that sort of anger that is produced by terror
that is by a pain of apprehension, as well as the
more common kind of anger which is produced
by some pain of sufferance: in which cases it
is apt to exercise a very pernicious sway in the
breasts of those unhappy persons who have in a remarkable degree shaken
off the influence of the three penal sanctions. It is
to this alliance natural but detestable alliance we
are to attribute the wanton outrages that are but too frequently
exercised by robbers. the for
robber point of property, it is an uncommon thing to see a robber without any
previous quarrel with the sufferer, will often
destroy as much as he carries off. He will beat
or otherwise misuse the persons people of the house, without
any attempt on their part to resist. The
punishment of which he apprehends they may possibly
be the means of bringing down upon him
is sufficient to make him take a pleasure in their pain
