magnitude of a Pleasure7. Tis in respect to the aggregate of these its three dimensions that Body
is said to be great or small: 'tis of these that its magnitude is composed:
it's magnitude is the product of all of them together. It may be
said to be the same with Of Pleasure the same may be said in respect of these its two dimensions.
It's magnitude is the product of one of them by the other. [a]

This expression, common as it is, being a loose and abbreviated one
is not apt not to be clearly understood. Length, breadth and thickness are elements dimensions, elements of body. Intensity and Duration are Qualities
elements of Pleasure. But It is not Body that is multiplied by Body: it is not
Quality that is multiplied by Quality; it is number always that
is multiplied by Number. A Product is a Number resulting from
the multiplication of either of the two numbers by the other. The Term "Product" therefore is strictly applicable to Numbers only. When applied to things other than numbers, An imaginary division of
them is supposed, by which they are resolved, as it were, resolved into Numbers. which into numbers they it were resolved
They are, each of them, supposed to be divided into a certain number
of parts or degrees: parts if they are substances: degrees if they are
qualities. This done, the number of the parts of one of them taken
as many times as there are units in the number of the parts of the
other, is that third number that is called the Product.
