Happ: ss and Unhapp.ss their Dimensions. Value of a Pain or Pleasure.

22.

Connection between Sensations in our power: they are often in our power, because the causes of them are
often in our power. The same action that is the cause of the pleasure we
would enjoy, is often the cause of the pain we would avoid. The pleasure coming
along with the cause, and the pain after it, hence the pain is the consequence
of the pleasure. It concerns us to know when this is the case. The cause being
in our power, we may forbear producing the pleasure it.[+] It is right
forbear to produce the pleasure, when the pain that is the consequence of it is (I will not say greater) but predominant in value
[b].

Note.

[b]The expression "value of a pain" may to some appear rather a harsh one.
The term "value" it is not unusual to apply to objects other than what are supposed to produce pleasure: to objects other than what are
desirable. But either this we must have for objects that are the contrary
or none: at allfor there is no other that corresponds to if applicable to them.
The license of using it in this sense is therefore a license justified by necessity:
nor is it by any means an unexampled one. Mathematicians speak without
scruple of the values of their y x and y: tho' x and y are often made to
signify debts; objects as anyone can witness not at all desirable.
Perhaps the word importance might be made to answer the same
purpose; at least in many cases.

[+] By forbearing to produce it, we may avoid producing the
consequence. By forbearing to perform the action that in this produces the pleasure, we shall it is true forbear producing
the pleasure, but we shall avoid likewise at the same time
avoid producing the pain. It is our business to forbear
producing the pleasure, when the pain thus connected with
it, is (we are not to say simply greater;since that would be to
take into consideration two only out of the five ingredients
in it's value, but) preponderant in value or importance.
