who are more scandalized at this idea, of the tyrant than
at all his cruelties.] A proposition thus calculated
to promote the happiness of mankind has excites met
more horror in with worse treatment with moralists of a certain
stamp than the worst of those cruelties which
destroy it. They will tell answer you nay: for that the
pleasures that a sensualist had in view were indubitably
impure. But either the word impure
had with them no meaning, that was any thing to the purpose or it meant, in the
sense in which I always mean to take it, the only deferenate since it is capable of pleasure
of such a nature as to be attended more frequently
than not attended or follow'd by pains more than
equivalent to it. But this was certainly no part
of the proposal. To one consistent reasoner who reasons consistently, the
quality of a pleasure independent of its quantity
is of no account. Every thing that produces pleasure
is prima facie good: if it is to be reputed
bad, it can only be in virtue of some pain which
it produces more than equivalent to such pleasure
If then The pleasure being incontestable, in order to prove
the cause of it to be an evil, it lies upon any one to
prove that it is productive of such attendant pain.
