into a variety of conclusions as false as they are

Pleasures and Pains — their kinds how measured
So much for the circumstances that are ingredients
in the value of a pleasure as far as cncerns considered as being
enjoyed by as far as a single individual is concerned in it:
when a whole community that is a multitude of individuals is considered as being concerned
in it, the value of it is to be multiplied
by the number of such individuals. The total value
of the stock of pleasure belonging to the whole community
is to be obtained by multiplying the number expressing the value
of it as respecting each any one person, by the number
expressing the multitude of such individuals. The acceptance it a pleasure receives in value by this circumstance
may be denominated its extent.
a lot of happiness
A pleasure consider'd as extending itself in
this manner through a whole community would
hardly in common language be termed a pleasure;
it would rather be termed a lot of happiness.
Fecundity and Purity
So much for the value of a pleasure consider'd
by itself. Consider'd with reference to other sensations
that may result from the same causes, the value
of it may be regarded as susceptible of two other ingredients
, fecundity and purity: fecundity, in as far
as those causes may be productive of sensations of the same kind, to wit pleasures: purity
in so far as they may be exempt from producing sensations of the opposite kind; to wit pains.
It is evident that the same pleasures more in number and
value any given pleasure is follow'd by, the greater
will be its value; and the more pains, the less.
