Civil Equalization – Brouillon

Community of goods

When each every man
who works, works for himself,
his labour is
performed voluntarily
and with
pleasure, and
his exertions are
animated by the
invigorating principle
of reward.

When a man works
for the account of
a large community
of which he
is but one, and
from which he
would derive the
same maintenance
whether the value of
his work be ever
so great or ever
so inconsiderable,
reward is out of
the question, and labour
is annexed evil and
punishment is
the only principle
that can keep
him to his work it
is the fear of punishment

---page break---

What then is
the institution
of a community
of goods? a contrivance
for substituting
punishment
to reward,
pain to pleasure,
fear to hope, and
servitude to liberty.
To keep society Under
works together on this plan this regimen,
men must be treated
at the best
like schoolboys,
most probably if not like slaves.

Present Sparta
and modern
Paraguay have
afforded examples
of a state
of things not far
different from this.

Something like it
too seems to prevail
among in
the small sect fraternity
of the Dumplers
in Pennysylvania
and in the more
diffused sect of
the Moravians in
Germany.

The extreme difficulty
of heaping
up a state
of things so repugnant unnatural
to the ordinary feelings
and propensities
of human nature
is the best property
attending it.
The Spartan regimen
presents
a system of extravagance
against
which the
improvements
that have taken
place in the art
of war have
happily shut
the door: and
in an age like this
the religious fancies
-vor which gave
birth to the other
examples seem
not likely to be not any to threaten
of any very long continuance.

The system of a community
of goods is a
contrivance for
carrying on the
whole business
of society by
forced labour.
What then shall
we say of a
plan, the object
of which is to
subject the whole
community for
ever to the fate
of criminals?
