... as might and would have been given to it by any one of the
hands so employed; or at any rate by the ablest of them. Suppose
such suggestive parts executed, as above, by so many different
hands, — the whole would remain as it were a rope
of sand: an assemblage of unconnected and mutually-incongruous
fragments, no two matching with each other, no succeeding
one carrying on the design commenced by any of
the preceding ones.
In the case here in question, from
this singleness, inconveniences, on
the other hand, there are, the existence of which can not be
denied. But, where the hand in question is that of a foreigner,
these inconveniences, such as they will be seen not to
have no place. Under that head, therefore, namely in §8 in preference to
the present, they will be brought to view.
