Sanctions Concerning Sanctions. On the several Sanctions
that have place and operate in the field of Legislation Note.

the work of which this chapter forms a part.

and Temptations and Inducements Synonymous to inducement is motive: but not in its original import
at least not coextensive: therefore nor adequate. Inducement applies alike to
action and inaction: to
inaction which considered as
the result of will, under the guidance of judgment or forbearance. A Motive to be still has the appearance of a self contradiction in terms: but in the phrase motives to or for
forbearance, the doing contradiction is somewhat disguised.

Inseparably connected are the ideas respectively designated
by the words Sanction sanction, temptation, and inducement.

The idea of sanction, indeed but necessarily supposes
the idea of a correspondent temptation: of a temptation
to the force of which the force of it is stands opposed.

imports of the word temptation and the word sanction are
included.

An inducement is the idea Necessarily included Inseparably connected is
the import of the word idea attached to inducement is the idea of agency:
in the case in question, human agency.

An inducement is the idea of pleasure or pain in
this or that shape considered as being more or less likely to
result from the act with reference to which it is an inducement.
The expectation of pleasure in this or that shape considered as about
to result fro the performance of the act is an inducement
to perform the act: so, the expectation of pain in this or
that shape considered as about to result but for the performance
of the act, but and is being about to prevented in the case of the
performance of the act.
