Usually Generally Attached to Inseparably connected with the word temptation is the idea of disapprobation
considered as applied to the act to the performances production
of which the temptational force of the temptation applies itself.

Attached in like manner to the word sanction is the idea
of approbation considered as applied to the cause any forces which
operates by its operation tend is considered as operating in the
direction opposite to that in which the correspondent temptation
operates, in the direction which the tendency of it is to present present
effect accomplish the prevention of the performance of the act to the
production of which the temptation applies itself.

It is to the force of religion – of opinion on the subject of religion
that is the moral force, to in the designation of which in the first instance this word
sanction was employed to : after that and from thence, the
force of law, and thus came the distinction or division of Sanctions into
human and superhuman.

On this occasion a correspondence and distinction that requires to be constantly
kept in mind is that between a positive act and a negative
act. An act is a motion: whether it be of body or of mind. A negative act is the non-existence or absence of a
positive act: but in so much for as it the performance existence of it is the result
of will acting under the direction of judgment, some such word as the word forbearance
abstinative abstinence, avoidance is employed in the designation of it.

In many instances a negative act state of things or a negative idea presents itself, by
means of the denomination attached to it, under in the aspect
of a positive one. Thus health is the absence of disease: sobriety the
absence of forbearance from drunkenness: chastity abstinence from
whatever act of sexual gratification is regarded with disapprobation.
☞ Note: These are habits not acts: no single act of sobriety or chastity.
