Constitutional Code. Ch. IX. §.17. Supplement

follows next upon Art. 53 or 17 in the page designed
for printing.

Art 54 or 18. Of the two heads of the Church, his
Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury is one; the
Lord High Chancellor – patron of 500 livings – the
other: the Archbishop, the sacred head; the Chancellor the profane.

Give anybody from £20,000 to £35,000
a year, you may have piety, equal to what you
have at present in an Archbishop of Canterbury
and a Lord High Chancellor.

1 First as to the Archbishop, A Canon has as much piety as £1,000
a year infuses: make him Archbishop of Canterbury,
he will have twenty times as much.

In France, under Charles the 10th, is
probative force, and the fruit piety, is as the attitude given to a travelling pile ton of wood
cut into the of "similitude of a" dead God.⊞ ⊞ In the kingdom
of Ava, the proof,
and of course the
persuasion, are by
several feet higher
than in France. Gold,
being the matter of
which money is made,
gives then an additional
advantage.
In A True it is, that
in Ava, the image,
though a God, not
being united to wood, –
the probative force of it
lies in this respect under
a disadvantage.
But, gold being the
matter of which every
thing that is seen of it
is made, and that
metal the matter
of which the most valuable
sort of money is
made, thus
made up for, how
serious so ever is the
disadvantage.
As in France, probative force
and party are in the attitude
of a wooden God, so In in England, it is they are as the quantity of money,
expended in Italy sinecures for the walking self-styled receptacles
of the Holy Ghost, and in the edification of lofty
edifices called Churches, still taller than either of the
two Gods. Edify buildings so they be but called Churches, you edify minds. Edify a Church, a God, if properly invited⊞2 ⊞2 ( Bishop knows how) takes possession of it, calls it his house, sees and hears there what he could not see or hear elsewhere, and there you
may, as often as you please, hold conversation with him, if you are content that, the like the reciprocity spoken of in Parliament once, it shall be all of it on side.
For proof of all this,
you have little more to
do than to multiply
by a thousand the
two or three on a certain
occasion spoken of.

T'other day, a want of aptitude
discovered in the London Policy Magistrate's Offices –
in all of them at once – and the same want – was discovered by the late Home Secretary; quantity wanted, just a third
of the quantity already possessed. To equalize supply with
demand, a third as much more salary as was found
attached, was therefore necessary. £600 a year was
the quantity possessed at the time of the discovery. £200 a
year is a third as much more as £600
a year: aptitude in the additional quantity has therefore followed of course.
In lieu of that this pecuniary proof, proof from
experience was proposed to him: he would not
hear of it: the pecuniary proof is arithmetical, &
and arithmetical proof is mathematical. proof.
Experience swarms with doubts: mathematics
shuts the door against all doubts. As to reason, it is out of the question the nature of the case puts an utter extension upon it
than preference. But what preference is there that can be
made for any such waste, unless it be in the – Aptitude is as opulence?
